Andrew’s concert will include works by Mertz, Bach, Tarrega, Albeniz, A.Barrios, De Falla, Piazzolla and Dyens.
From an early age, guitarist Andrew McEvoy has developed a reputation for fiery, colorful and engaging performance. At 18, he was a soloist with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and was featured on National Public Radio’s “From the Top,” having already performed at prestigious venues across the country including the Smithsonian Institution and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Andrew continued his career by moving to Richmond, Virginia to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Virginia Commonwealth University. He graduated Magna cum Laude with a special award for distinguished achievement in performance, being the only guitarist in over 20 years to win the school’s concerto competition. He was a founding member of The Richmond Guitar Quartet, performed alongside the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra and the VCU Symphony, and was a Jesús Silva Merit Scholar. He was also featured twice on WCVE-Richmond’s “An Hour with the Guitar.”
After earning his degree, Andrew was invited to direct guitar studies at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. At that point he had been an active teacher and mentor for developing guitarists for seven years. In the four years since he began teaching at Randolph-Macon, Andrew has proudly overseen his students’ many musical achievements. He also began a series of guitar concerts and founded a guitar society which still holds monthly meetings.
In 2009, Andrew received a scholarship to pursue graduate study with Julian Gray at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory. Under Mr. Gray’s expert tutelage, Andrew visited even broader musical horizons. Andrew received a Master of Music in Performance and Pedagogy in May 2011. During his study at Peabody, Andrew was the principal player in a guitar orchestra which accompanied Grammy Award-winning guitarist William Kanengiser. Andrew was also named “Notable Performer” for 2009-10 by his colleagues in Julian Gray’s studio.
Throughout a decade as a professional guitarist, Andrew has performed in masterclasses for some of the instrument’s finest players. These include Roland Dyens, Raphaella Smits, Nicholas Goluses, Lorenzo Micheli, Ricardo Cobo, Stephen Aron, Risa Carlson, Denis Azabagic, and Jason Vieaux.
Andrew currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. He teaches private guitar lessons at the Collegiate School in Richmond’s west end. Andrew continues to share his love of music with the public through weekly performances for concert series and special events in the Richmond, Washington D.C., and Baltimore metropolitan areas. He is also available for private instruction by special appointment.
The concert is presented by the Charlottesville Classical Guitar Society, founded in 1993, a non-profit, educational organization whose purpose is to foster interest in the Classical Guitar. Funds that are raised through member concerts, dues, sponsors, and donations enable CCGS to bring a fine arts concert series to Charlottesville featuring the world's foremost guitarists and lutenists. Members of the society perform monthly on the third Sunday of each month at “Cville Coffee” coffeshop at Harris and McIntire, Charlottesville from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
