Object Description:

FRENCH MUSKET MODEL 1842T DRAGOON .71
Manufactured by M.A.S., St. Etienne, France - Rifled. Single-shot percussion muzzleloader. Three bands with upper band double-strapped. Back action lock. Bayonet lug bottom of barrel. Weapon complete and in good condition.

Markings:
Lock: PALIARD V F/A. ST. ETIENNE.
Barrel: 1846. T/850.
Barrel tang: MLE 1842.
Triggerguard: 3.
Buttplate: 230 (possibly old museum rack number).

1909 Catalog #0656 - "Musket. French Rifled Musket. Short. Cal. .71. On tang, M. 1842. On lock plate, Paliard V.F.A. St. Etienne. On lower part of barrel near stock, T 850 (AD). On tang, 1846. Sight graduated to 1,000 yards."

Notes: "Dragoon Musket, Models 1842 and 1857. Similar to the infantry muskets in all details except in overall length, which was 48.8 in. Like the musket, early models were later rifled, apparently in cal .71, and given folding leaf rear sights. All carried the same socket bayonets as the infantry muskets. Some of the Model 1842 were manufactured under contract...." - Todd
