Object Description:

U.S. RIFLE GRENADE LAUNCHER M76
Maker unknown - The M76 rifle grenade launcher (T140) is a cylindrical shaped sleeve with a hinged latching mechanism connected to a collar on the rear of the sleeve. Range setting calibration marks are provided on the sleeve for varying the position of the grenade. The launcher is used with Rifle, 7.62-millimeter, automatic: M14 for launching fragmentation or antitank grenades. Launcher weighs approximately 7 oz. Cartridge: Cartridge, Grenade: rifle, 7.62mm, NATO, M64.

Launcher transferred to the Museum on 22 August 1966. At that time launcher was appraised at $2.45.

HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:
1JUL63 - 30JUN64 - "40mm Grenade Launcher Attachment for M14 Rifle - Two weapon systems were designed and fabricated. Demonstrations were held at various agencies where considerable interest was exhibited. Both systems are currently undergoing recoil, velocity, accuracy and endurance tests at Springfield Armory. As a result of the demonstrations at Ft. Benning, an SDR was published. Hq, AWC funded Springfield Armory to continue this development under design studies."

Notes: "The launcher is utilized for launching grenades from the rifle. The lanucher slides over the flash suppressor and is secured to the rifle by a clip latch that snaps over the bayonet lug of the flash suppressor." - Poyer
