Object Description:

WINCHESTER CARBINE MODEL 1892 .44 SN# 842633
Manufactured by Winchester, New Haven, Ct. in 1917 - Standard lever-action repeating rifle. 11-round tubular magazine located beneath barrel. Solid frame. Saddle ring on left side of frame. One barrel band, screw fastened. Adjustable carbine type rear sight. Rear sight, saddle bar and ring missing from this specimen.

Markings:
Frame: P/W in oval. 842633.
Barrel: MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A.
PATENTED OCT. 14, 1884. 44. W.C.F. P/W in oval.
Tang: MODEL 1892/WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF.

Weapon transferred to the Museum on 17 June 1938. At that time weapon was appraised at $10.00.

Notes: "The Model 1892 was built between 1892 and 1932 with slightly more that 1 million sold. The Model 1892 carbine continued ot be offered for sale until 1941." - Schwing

It has been reported that at least one unit from Pennsylvania carried a Winchester .44 caliber carbine during the Spanish-American War. Although we are not sure of the model, it was probably similar to this one.

Annie Oakley owned a Model 1892 Winchester rifle, sn# 41023. Oakley also owned a smoothbore M1892 rifle, sn# 301670.
