Object Description:

U.S. MUSKET MODEL 1816 TYPE II SPRINGFIELD ARMORY FLINTLOCK .69
Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Ma. in 1827 - Standard Springfield Model 1816 Type II single-shot muzzleloading flintlock musket with sideplate stamped 1 QR 1827 indicating a sample arm 1st quarter production of 1827. Iron furniture, brown finish. Three bands, spring-fastened, upper-band double-strapped. Button head shaped ramrod. Brass detachable flashpan. Weapon has unusually nice grain to wood. A good bit of nice original browning remaining on metal parts and appears to be unfired. Springfield Armory manufactured 14,500 muskets in 1827 at a cost of $10.49.

Markings:
Lock: Eagle/U.S. SPRING/FIELD/1827.
Barrel: 1827. P in sunken circle/Eaglehead/V.
Trigger guard: SD. B. SD = Samuel Dale.*
Stock: EA J. Illegible initials in oval behind triggerguard. Inspector's cartouche in oval on left side of stock.
Buttplate: 21 (perhaps old Museum number.).

1909 Catalog # 2042 - "Musket. Sp'f'd Smooth Bore Flint Lock Musket. Cal. 695. M'f'd 1827."

Notes: "In 1827 Springfield Armory manufactured 14,500 muskets at average cost of $10.49 whereas Harper's Ferry Arsenal manufactured 12,020 muskets at an average cost of $11.97." - Hartzler & Whisker

*"MR. SAMUEL DALE. Mr. Samuel Dale, sone of Thomas Dale, Sr., was born in Springfield, July 18, 1787. He was a skillful mechanic and was employed at the United States Armory for over forty years. He made all the inspectors' stamps, eagles and other fine work." - Charles Chapin
