Object Description:
U.S. SABER MODEL 1840 CAVALRY
Maker unknown - Regulation M1840 Heavy Cavalry or Dragoon saber. The so-called "wrist-breaker." Curved single-edged blade with fuller running to 8" of tip. Half-basket, knuckle bow with two-branch brass guard. Leather covered, wooden, wire-wrapped grip. Leather flaking on grip. Blemishes on blade. Sword weighs approximately 2 1/2 lbs.

Pommel: 37. Guard: 37.
Notes: "It should be noted that during the 1840s there was no regular cavalry, only dragoons. Nevertheless, this model was called a 'cavalry saber' in contemporary Ordnance manuals. Modern day collectors often call this sword the 1840 dragoon saber." - Crouch
