Object Description:

BRITISH REVOLVER TRANTER .44 SN# 7282T
Manufactured by Deane & Son, London, England in 1860 - Cased Tranter 5-shot percussion revolver as made by Deane & Son of London Bridge. Revolver is blued with checkered wood grips, double action, with spur on hammer. 6" octagonal barrel, with Tranter's patent loading lever on side. Case measures 14/75x7.75x2.25 inches, has a circular brass plate on top engraved: E.A. BERGER, ESQ. 10TH REGT. Deane & Son label in lid. Case contains: Dixon bag flask; box of rancid Tranter's Patent lubricating composition; two empty tine circular boxes; screwdriver type nipple wrench; cleaning rod; a pinch of tow; one Tranter bullet.

Frame: DEANE & SON, 30 KING WILLIAM ST. LONDON BRIDGE.
Right side: NO 7282T. Left side: W. TRANTER'S/PATENT.
Loading lever: W. TRANTER'S/PATENT.
Cylinder: Proofs.
Case: E.A. BERGER, ESQ./10 REGT. Inside: DEANE AND SON.)/GUN MAKERS/TO H.R.H PRINCE ALBERT/30 KING WILLIAM STREET/LONDON BRIDGE.

TRANTER'S/PATENT/LUBRICATING COMPOSITION/IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT THIS COMPOSITION/SHOULD BE APPLIED TO EVERY LUBRICATING BULLET./DIRECTIONS FOR USE/MELT THE LUBRICATION, DIP IN THE GROOVED END OF THE BULLET, WHICH WILL FILL/THE GROOVE; WHILE WARM WIPE THE LUBRI-/CATION FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE/BULLET, LET IT STAND ON ITS BASE/TILL COOL, AND IT IS READY/FOR USE.

Weapon donated to the Springfield Armory NHS from Tufts University (Victor A. Friend Collection) on 3 August 1979.

Friend's # - 1-4 "Cased English Percussion Revolver. Made on W. Tranter's Patent by 'Deane & Sons, Gun Makers to His Royal Highness Prince Albert, London Bridge.
Case contains bullet mould, powder flask, nipple wrench and boxes for bullets, caps and bullet lubricant.
Revolvers like this one were made on the Tranter Patent by J. Adams, London, and purchased by both the Federal and Confederate Governments during the Civil War."

Notes: "Deane, J. & Son - 30 King William Street, London, England, 1858-72. Successors to Deane & Co.. It would appear that George Deane became inactive in 1852 as Deane & Co. carried on under the direction of John Deane until 1858, when he admitted a son to membership in the firm, which accordingly became J. Deane & Son. Makers of sporting rifles, shotguns, and the 'Deane-Harding (Robert Harding) Patent No. 5536 L" and William Tranter's patent five-shot, double-action percussion rifles." - Gardner
