Maker/Manufacturer:
Date of Manufacture:
Eminent Figure:
Catalog Number:SPAR 8089
Measurements:OL: 36.1CM 14 1/4"

Object Description:

POWDER FLASK
Maker unknown - Flattened powder horn flash with iron top and bottom and charger nozzle. Has two carrying rings to which is attached a short length of multicolored cord. One side of horn has three panels of engraving, two of which show armored knights and the third is an elephant. The reverse of the horn is engraved with three series of concentric circles. Friend's notes state this is the accompanying horn for the wheellock rifle, SPAR-8088. But the powder charge thrown by the spout would seem excessive for the rifle in question. Horn measures 14 1/4" overall, is complete, operable and overall very good.

Flask donated to the Springfield Armory NHS by Tufts University (Victor A. Friend Collection) on 3 August 1979.

Friend's # 2-2A - "Wheel-lock Powder Flask. This ivory flask is of the type used with early wheel-lock guns and is engraved with designs and hunting scenes. The side shown is divided in three panels. The first two show hunters in armor bearing round shields, one armed with a spear and the other holding a short sword. Also shown are hunting dogs. The third panel shows a large tusked elephant. The metal nozzle of the flask has valve devices for measuring the powder charge."

Notes: "Flask, wheel-lock. Shows two men stalking an elephant." - Brown
