Notes: "This is a vastly different weapon from anything which had previously come from Sauer, and it is undoubtedly among the best of its kind. But for World War II it might well have been a commercial success, although the entire production was taken over by the army and Luftwaffe and manufacture ended with the close of the war.
The Model 38H is a blowback pistol of conventional pattern, but of superior design and heavier than most of its contemporaries, giving it good shooting qualities. It has a double-action trigger mechanism plus an unusual thumb-operated catch just behind the trigger which will release the internal hammer under control and allow it to be safely lowered on a loaded chamber. This lever can also be used to cock the hammer for deliberate single-action fire. When the hammer is down, a straight pull on the trigger will cock and fire if speed is more important than accuracy. A manual safety (omitted on specimens produced in 1944-5) was also provided." - Hogg & Weeks
